Fulbright Days: Celebrating Around the World
The Fulbright Program’s success is based on a sustained commitment to international bilateral partnerships and shared priorities. Throughout 2021, Fulbright Commissions, U.S. Embassies, Universities, and other Fulbright partners and supporters held Fulbright Days to celebrate the 75th anniversary with a wide and varied range of activities. In total, 66 countries and territories around the world celebrated the impact of Fulbright partnerships across the globe.
Fulbright Day: Iceland - February 23
To commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the Fulbright Program and the 64th Anniversary of Fulbright Iceland, the Commission in Iceland hosted a day full of celebratory events, including the release of a special 75th Anniversary Edition Newsletter, the premier of a grantee profile video and three live events with notable Fulbright alumni.
Fulbright Day: Guinea - March 31
On March 31, the Fulbright Program team in Guinea joined the worldwide celebration of Fulbright’s 75th anniversary by highlighting the cultural importance of exchange programs. Guinea's events dabbled in dance and ventured through the joyous memories of studying abroad and savoring dishes both familiar and unknown.
Fulbright Day: South Africa - April 21
On April 21, 2021, in celebration of the 75th Anniversary of the Fulbright Program, U.S. Mission South Africa celebrated the signing of the NRF-IIE Fulbright Funding agreement. That same evening, four South African Fulbrighters were put to the test in a live-streamed general knowledge quiz!
Fulbright Day: Trinidad and Tobago - April 22
In celebration of the Fulbright Program’s 75th Anniversary, U.S. Embassy, Port of Spain presented "Fulbright Day Trinidad and Tobago: Alumni Making an Impact," a panel which featured Fulbright alumni leaders from Trinidad and Tobago: Ms. Melissa Jimenez, Dr. Samantha Chaitram, and Dr. Andrew Hunte.
Fulbright Day: Romania - May 18
On May 18th, the Romanian-U.S. Fulbright Commission honored 75 years since the global Fulbright Program was initiated and 60+ years of its presence in Romania through the virtual event titled "Fulbright at 75: A Global Response to Global Opportunities and Challenges."
Fulbright Day: Turkey - May 7
The Commission for Educational Exchange between the United States and Turkey, the Turkish Fulbright Commission, was established by a bi-national agreement signed between the United States and Turkey in 1949. Since the creation of the Commission in 1949, funding has been provided by the governments of Turkey and the United States. On May 7, Turkey celebrated 75 years of the Fulbright Program with a full day of events.
Fulbright Day: Bolivia - May 25
To celebrate the 75th Anniversary of Fulbright, Bolivia will host a month of special activities to mark this momentous occasion. The main event, a virtual alumni summit called "IMPACT: 75 Years of Global Actions, Opportunities, and Connections," will take place on May 25.
Fulbright Day: Argentina - August 25
On August 25th, Fulbright Argentina hosted a virtual live panel: "The Fulbright Experience: How Fulbright Changed My Life" to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Fulbright Program and to share the personal and professional accomplishments of Fulbright alumni.
Fulbright Day: Australia - October 22
To commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Fulbright Program, the Fulbright Commission in Australia hosted an online discussion panel featuring four pre-eminent Fulbright Scholars, and moderated by Emmy award-winning journalist and Fulbright Board member, Sara James.
Fulbright Day: Hungary - October 8
On October 8, Fulbright Hungary commemorated the 75th anniversary of the Fulbright Program and the 30th anniversary of the Hungary Fulbright Association with an event titled, “A Community Based on Shared Values,” held at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.
Fulbright Day: India - November 12
On November 12, 2021, the United States Educational Foundation in India celebrated the 75th anniversary of the Fulbright Program with the opening of the art exhibit “Reciprocation - American Fulbright Artists and India/Collaborations & Connections.” The exhibit opened on November 12, 2021 and continued until December 8, 2021.
Fulbright Day: Bangladesh - October 28
To commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Fulbright Program, U.S. Embassy Dhaka and Bangladeshi Fulbright alumni hosted a special two-day virtual conference titled “Celebrating 75 Years of Fulbright: U.S.-Bangladesh Together Towards Tomorrow” on October 27-28, 2021.
Fulbright Day: Italy - November 9
Fulbright Italy presented a panel titled, "Identity and searching for Black lives in the archives in the words of Lanitra Berger and Maaza Mengiste" with award-winning author and Fulbright alumna Maaza Mengiste, social justice advocate and award-winning scholar LaNitra Berger, and Fulbright Italy Board Member Timothy Martin.
Fulbright Day: Mexico - November 10
As the Mexico-U.S. Commission for Educational and Cultural Exchange (COMEXUS) celebrates the Fulbright Program’s 75th Anniversary and its own 30th year of existence, November 10 served as “Fulbright Day” in Mexico! This day kicked off with interactive posts and stories on social media and ended with a Fulbright Anniversary Discussion Series (Conversatorios).
Fulbright Day: Mozambique - November 22
The Fulbright Day: Mozambique commemoration consisted of a virtual panel of alumni from different Fulbright programs available, including Gaspar Come, Fulbright Teaching English Assistant; Sandra Buvane, Hubert Humphrey Fellow; Tani Machonissa, Fulbright Scholar.
Fulbright Day: Sri Lanka - December 13
To celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the global Fulbright Program, the Fulbright Commission in Sri Lanka presented a virtual keynote address, “Connecting Crossing Boundaries and Imaging sans Structures: Reflections on Fulbright Experiences," by Fulbright Alumnus and eminent scholar Prof. Gamini Keerawella.
Fulbright Day: Albania - December 2
During Albania’s Fulbright Day, which coincided with International Education Week, Public Affairs Officers Chad Twitty and Amanda Roberson delivered welcome remarks and highlighted the many contributions of Albanian Fulbright alumni in academia, where a large number hold leadership positions.
